Synthetic graphics purporting to depict Venezuela's president in custody following his capture by the United States have garnered many millions of views online.
The Way AI Images of the President Emerged Rapidly
Initial fabricated AI image seemingly showing him being escorted off a plane surfaced a brief time later. The graphic was absent from any authoritative government accounts; it was instead published on the platform X by an profile purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Verification involved the SynthID tool, determining the image was produced or modified with AI tools.
More AI-generated images started circulating in the following period, appearing to show more angles of Maduro in custody. Noticeable logos on these images reveal they came from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
SynthID confirms these additional images were likewise generated or edited AI technology.
Authentic Image Released but Fakes Continued
Donald Trump shared the genuine photograph of Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. But even after the authentic image was made public, synthetic pictures kept circulating but were modified to include the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.
Reverse image searches indicate these updated fakes were first posted on TikTok by a digital art profile. Similarly, SynthID found these subsequent pictures were created or altered AI tools.
