Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track right in his path

The dangerous situation happened on the third lap when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to swap his broken nose section

Racer's Instant Response

Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"

"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two guys dashing across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"

Security Issues Highlighted

"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a active circuit track officials can be allowed to just run across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm sure we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the circumstances

"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the regulatory authority

"On lap three, safety personnel were informed and placed on standby to access the circuit and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy marshals were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was displayed in that zone"

"We are still investigating what occurred subsequent to that time"
