Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
